Videos can be used in different pedagogical approaches, as image for itself can be associated either to a transmissive and teacher centered pedagogical model, either to a student centered one or to another pedagogical model along in the continuum. So, videos can be used as a resource to present information or a demonstration, as an assignment or as part of assessment. The pedagogical approach depends on the interactivity or integration promoted.
To characterize videos pedagogies, some elements must then be considered: content, how it is presented, when and who develops and presents the video. Different pedagogical approaches will emerge depending on the type of videos, aims, interactivity, students’ autonomy, etc.
Some examples of using videos in different pedagogical models are presented below:
- Teacher centered approach: Lectures, demonstrations, tutorials
- Videos as a resource for professional development
- Students developing their own videos
- Individualized learning as a transversal approach
- Flipped classroom
